What is a credit card?

A credit card is a convenient way to buy goods and services now and pay for them later.

The amount you can borrow is set by your credit card provider, who will give you a pre-approved limit when your application is accepted. To find out more about how credit cards work, read our article: What is a credit card?
How can I compare credit cards?

How can I apply for a credit card online?
It only takes a few minutes to apply for a credit card online. Just make sure you don't apply for several cards in short period of time, as it could affect your credit score.

Compare different credit cards – before you apply, make sure you compare credit cards to find the best one for you.

Check your credit score – according to the Al Etihad Credit Bureau (AECB), you'll need a credit score between 300 and 900. The higher your credit score, the better.

Check your eligibility – most providers will have their own requirements for you to apply for a credit card, such as minimum age or income criteria.

Complete your application – now you're ready to apply for a credit card online. To save time, make sure you have the right proof of identity, address and income. You can find these in our article: How to apply for a credit card.

Review your credit card offer – if your application is approved, your lender may send you an offer to review. Make sure you check the fees, payment due dates and minimum monthly payments.

How is interest charged on a credit card?

Credit card interest is calculated daily based on your outstanding balance and charged monthly. To avoid being charged interest, repay your credit card balance in full each month. Otherwise, you’ll be charged a percentage.

Can I use my credit card abroad?
In most cases, yes you can use credit cards abroad. Visa and Mastercard are accepted worldwide, although you may have to pay currency exchange or withdrawal fees.
