How do I apply for a bank account online?
It only takes a few minutes to apply for a bank account online. Here’s how to do it:

Compare different bank accounts – before you apply, make sure you compare bank accounts to find the one that’s right for you

Check your eligibility – to be eligible for a bank account in the UAE, you must be at least 18 years old and have a valid UAE residency visa. You may also need to meet certain income criteria

Decide if you want a joint account – a joint account can be a more convenient option for couples, but you’ll both need to provide the relevant documents and complete the application process

Complete your application – now you’re ready to apply for your bank account online. To save time, make sure you have the right documents ready, such as your Emirates ID, passport, proof of income and proof of residence

How do I open a salary account?
You can usually open a salary account online or through your bank's mobile banking app. Here are the steps you'll need to take:

Compare different salary accounts – before you apply, you can compare salary accounts to find the best one for you. HSBC offers Premier and Advance accounts that can be used as salary accounts

Check your eligibility – to open a salary account, you’ll need to be 18 years old and have a valid UAE residency visa. You’ll also need to have your salary deposited into the account every month or maintain a minimum balance or relationship balance. If you don’t, you could face additional fees

Make sure you have the correct documents – you’ll need ID documents, plus proof of income and address. For details of what documents you’ll need, read our article: How to open a salary account

Complete your application – once you've got everything together, you’re ready to apply for a salary account online or in your bank’s mobile banking app

Give your employer your account details – once your account is open, your employer will need your bank details so they can pay your salary into the account. For more information, read our article: What bank details does my employer need?
Can I use my bank card abroad?

In most cases, yes, you can use your bank card abroad, but you may have to pay currency exchange or withdrawal fees, depending on what card you're using.

For example, if you're using a standard debit or credit card, you'll usually need to pay fees for using your card in another country. But if you use a multi-currency travel card, you can pay in local currency with reduced or no fees.

What are the types of bank accounts?
There are several types of bank accounts, with an option to suit everyone. Some of the most well-known are:

Basic bank accounts – no-frills accounts that give you just the basics you need

Everyday bank accounts – accounts suitable for day-to-day banking that also offer a few more perks, such as access to discounts and offers

Premium bank accounts – enhanced current accounts offering standard banking plus benefits such as personal service and financial advice, with eligibility often requiring a substantial salary or significant savings/investments

Private banking accounts – accounts typically aimed at high-net-worth individuals, offering exclusive benefits and specialised services
What is the minimum salary needed to open a bank account?

The minimum salary you’ll need to open a bank account varies from one account to another. Some basic bank accounts have no or a low minimum salary requirement, whereas for some premium bank accounts, the minimum salary criteria can be much higher.

Accounts with lower minimum salary requirements tend to come with fewer perks, but they also have lower fees.
